Anybody know of a good place to catch a couple dozen 4-5" sunfish / bluegill at Choke Canyon? I'm taking my nephew to set limb lines and read TPWD doesn't allow transporting bait from one body of water to another. We live a few hours away and I've never tried catching bait at the lake. Anybody know of any bait shops that sell sunfish? I'd hate to get out there and not be able to find enough bait.

The best bait you can use is cut carp/buffalo, Buds Bait & Tackle should have some. They also sell perch, but they aren’t cheap. I’d say you could cast net your own bait at Choke, but you’d lose your net very quickly. Check out the cut carp, it works.

You could prob cast net on the ramps, I wouldn’t venture off the ramp though.

I've tried a perch trap a few times in the past with little success. I've found the best way is to find them where they're thick and catch them with a rod and reel. A cast net will likely get hung up at Choke Canyon because of all the trees.

If you’ve never been there before, you’ll have to bait the lines just before dark or the Gar will steal all of your bait, if you use perch anyways. And please, remove your lines when you leave. It’s a mofo getting them unstuck from boat props while on the water.

The whole frozen tilapia from HEB works great in a pinch. Cut up in small chunks. Works great for channels and blues just dont expect to catch flatheads with it
