Taking the family to Cedar Creek pretty soon. Bringing 8 or so one piece 6-7' rods. Yukon XL packed to the brim.

I've never had this problem in a truck or big van.

Any ideas?

DIY PVC rod tubes on roof rack

Use the thin walled (Charlotte pipe or schedule 20) 6 inch diameter PVC, screw type end caps. PVC glue.
If you take reels off you can use 4 inch diameter.

Take reels off and put rods in travel tube (I have one you can borrow, let me know if interested) then attach travel tube to roof

That will work, but please take the reels off, don't want to let everybody know you're from Denton. clap

We do it every year in a shorter SUV (Expedition) with rods up to 7.5’. I just take the reels off and tie the rods together using those stretchy cloth rubber bands used for women’s pony tails. I then fasten the bunch of rods to the inside roof with more of the pony tail holders to the clothes hanger hooks inside the vehicle at the rear of the vehicle and the back door. They are up out of the way and secure enough they don’t rattle. Has worked for vacation every year for over 10 years!

I've used one of these for the last 12 years multiple airline trips to Maine and Canada.

Stood up to the baggage gorillas well and I can pack 8 rods pretty well with 4 butts each end. I used wire ties to keep them from bouncing around inside. I'd also pack pairs of socks or t-shirts in the middle that make them rock solid inside.

I have and used one of these but its bulky and kinda big.

Lastly I've also did the homemade 4" schedule 40 PVC with screw caps on the ends. (USPS broke one of these when I mailed it once.) It would work fine on a roof rack. I'd drill a hole in it though and have a safety loop of braided rope in case your ratchet straps slipped. Those are what I've traveled with and in your case the PVC would work best IMO.

Advice? Wise men don't need it. Fools won't heed it.

PVC on the roof rack. A 4” tube will hold 7 or 8 rods pretty easily. Glue a plain cap on one end and a screw cap on the other. Stuff a rag on the capped end for padding. Lay the rods out with half the butts facing each direction. Bundle them and slide them in the tube all at once. Gently stuff another rag at the end and screw on the cap.

I have something similar, if not identical, to the the top picture. I think I bought it from Bass Pro Shop around 10 years ago. The good thing about it is that the length is adjustable.

the pvc tube works great, used them to fly rods to costa rica and never had a problem, I used schedule 20 with the caps like posted above.

Rocky Robinson has a deal that hangs from the ceiling of the Suburban and the rods are separated by dividers. Here it is on Amazon. It's $15

Thanks for the suggestions. I'll fashion up pvc tube. My Yukon didn't come with the two roof rack support things though so I'll need to buy those.

I fashioned something like that for my Xterra, years ago and worked fantastic. I didn't have 8 kids with me though.
