Hello All,

I've been at Lake Champion for the last two weekends. Wind has blown like crazy both times but the morning fishing has not been bad. My son and I went this last Sunday, we drove down early in the morning and had a good hour of fishing before the wind picked up way too much. We caught some nice fish between 6:30 and 7:30AM. Hardly anyone was on the lake, the fish were up in six to ten feet of water. Water temps are still in the low to mid 50's. Week before last I saw some high 50's. you can see fish sitting just off the shallow water near the channel. [Linked Image]

Hope your lines are tight and the fishing is good..

Taking a few small fish home from this lake is a good thing IMO. All the fish are stunted, there are no good fish on the lake, no need for everyone to travel there and waste their time.

Thanks for update. Great spending time with your son. Making good memories. They grow up so fast. Enjoy.

Given what I have seen, in two weekends a total of 8 boats on the water, I don't think that the fish are in any threat of being fished out of the lake. I keep very few of what I catch, I do tend to keep two or three fish just over the legal length. I turned the bigger fish loose and only kept enough to for my family to have a nice meal. I prefer crappie but I have not had good luck on that lake fishing for them and catching them of any size. I have caught more than a few in the effort, in that effort I have caught only one that I could keep out of the 50 or more that I have caught recently. I have heard rumors there are some good fish in the lake, the temps are still low for spawn but the fish are prepped for it once water temperatures come up. I grew up fishing and hunting to eat, it beats the processed poison you buy in the stores. The lake had an algae kill about 8 years ago, it has been coming back nicely. I heard from the game warden there may be some 8 or 9 pound fish this year. Not huge fish, but a good sign that the fish population is healthy and aging nicely.

Douglas, if you figure out where the crappie are, I would sure appreciate some input.

Thanks,
David
