I called my dealer today about getting a new Merc 40 HP tiller to repower my big aluminum jon boat. They did not have one in stock of course and called Mercury and were told it would be at least 20 weeks until available. What in the world are they doing, just building V-12's? Seems like these size motors should be plentyful.

I would be checking with other dealers maybe a lot of them.

You need to call your dealer and get them to call their Merc rep and he can see all the dealers. Someone may have one. There are motor shortages for sure though.

Well I emailed Mercury customer svc. today and they told me the lead times are that far out. Blamed on Covid and high demand. Merc said they have hired more people and are trying to increase production. Guess I just picked a bad time to want a new motor. Sure glad I bought my new Ranger in 2019 before all this Covid mess developed. Here is Mercury's reply.

"Unfortunately it is certainly possible the lead times are that long. Outboard engine demand through all brands is higher than ever before due to COVID-19, but shipping and supplies are backlogged for the same reasons, causing delays. Lead times are longer than we want and we understand this is not an ideal situation. To reduce lead times we have added capacity, personnel, and additional shifts. We are working to significantly scale our engine production as fast as possible while meeting our strict manufacturing and quality standards. We sincerely appreciate your patience and your dedication to the Mercury Marine brand!"

That sounds about right!

I took my boat in for a re--power in Oct. , 200 yamaha, Just got it out this month , I got tired of dealership saying they were waiting on a motor,
I bought one online and had it shipped from California.
My neighbor has his pontoon boat in his driveway , since last October also, He says parts are not available to fix it.

There have been tons of boats sold in the last year and shortages in almost every category of Marine life!

I was looking for a new 40 to replace on my 16' aluminum and the cheapest one was $7500.00 plus tax.

I talked it over with my wife and we decided to buy a new boat instead!
