If I was interested in getting a young son into this, what is a starter season gonna cost me?
I want him to have a chance at success, not looking for bargain basement equipment.
What is a minimum
Cart
Transport? Open trailer work?
Fuel
Tires
How do you get started?
Assuming that he is 5 years old or better.....
THe first thing that I would do is get him a free demo at our track. You can get that info from our website
www.NTKarters.com. From there, buy the club membership for $400 per year. You can access to the track anytime you want it.
Then from there look for a chassis. Good used ones are tough to find as our sport is growing so fast. But you can also go new for about $2800 to $3500. I recommend BirelART.
I would race in the four stroke(LO206) class first. Two strokes are faster, but you can develop some bad habits, and waste a s..t ton of money by going to it first. A complete motor package with all of the little pieces is probably $1500 - $1600. We have to run Ethanol Free from Buccee's in Denton. $3.50+ per gallon. We use about a gallon for Friday night practice and Saturday Racing.
You'll also need a Mychron5 for your lap times and data. About $600 I think. And a kart stand. A manual lift stand is about $200-$300 . An electric is about $800.
One set of tires, that will last you quite a while in LO206, is $224.
We actually raced out of the bed of our truck for a while and then bought a 12' enclosed trailer for a couple $1000. Now we have a top of the line trailer from Phil's that was about $24k, but this is our only hobby, and trailers and kart gear hold their value well.
I also recommend coming out to a race to get a feel for it. Our next club race is April 10th. We qualify at 1 PM.
Please let me know if I can help in any way.
