That will probably work as long as you're around fish. But, for my 2 cents...I think you're working to hard. Now if you enjoy the bait making that's all together different. But if you just want to get your youngsters into some fish then I would go with some good punch bait. If you don't want the mess of that I'd go with either shrimp or chicken from the grocery store.
Good luck! Hope you catch a mess whatever you decide to use.

Hire Littlewheel. Then try and replicate what he teaches you. You’ll learn more from that guy in 1 trip then you would on your own in 10 yrs. Your boys will enjoy catching 100 channel cats and you can spare yourself the pain and torture of floating around like an idiot half the summer. You can buy some of their famous cheese bait and it doesn’t stink! Channels are easy to catch but there is a big difference between catching a handful and catching a boat full. If your one of those guys who isn’t willing to hire a guide then chum chum chum and they will come.
There is a fine line between fishing and floating around like an idiot!! Check out out my YouTube channel El Gato Azul TV https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCg0aV-uOxzxKxeqFFfREzKg ⚓️⚓️⚓️⚓️ Home of little boys holding big catfish! ⚓️⚓️⚓️⚓️
Call Stubby or his partner Littlewheel. Get some range cubes and Stubby's Cheese Bait, find a creek channel with trees near it, tie up to the one nearest the channel, throw out the cubes and start fishing.

Son! there are a couple magnum channels in that picture. I always hear how channel cats don't get that big here in Texas but I've caught several in the 8 to 10 pound range in the last few years. That's no trophy but they are sure fun to catch.

This is great advice on looking for a spot. Have to find out what depth they are in first, then follow the above directions about finding timber along a creek channel. Chum it a few days and it will be on like a pot of neck bones. My number is 9039872315 and I am always willing to talk.
