I have 16 days until retirement. Now I can go fish as much as I want, after I finish the honey do list.

I never understood how someone can not want to retire. I have way too many hobbies and can't wait to retire with a huge 401k and a boat and a beach house and a ranch. Assuming I make it that long...

I wasn`t looking for retirement, but was laid off last September. I was 3 months shy of being 62 and being able to start my social security. It was almost like a great retirement gift.

They gave me a nice severance package and been receiving unemployment ever since.

I was also able to get on my wife`s insurance since I was laid off for about 25% of what it would have cost me from an insurance company.

A the end of the day, I miss my job and wanted to work till I was 65, but I ain`t gonna look a gift horse in the mouth. I took the money and ran.

In the same boat.... I'm 52 and have corporate exhaustion. I've worked in Telecom for 32 years and the last 20 focusing on Wireless networks....Macro, small cell , C-RAN etc...I've got enough to retire but the insurance thing scares the he!! out of me, mainly cause I haven't looked into it deeply as of yet. I'd like to hear from any TFFers that have bought private healthcare insurance on the open market. Its just something I haven't done the research on and would love a high level overview...No kids, just me and the wife.

I've drawn a line in the sand of March 31st - yeh 2 weeks as I have some RSU's vesting I can cash in....I'll probably get bored at some point but this year will be filled with chasing morel mushrooms from Ok to Michigan, bass fishing a lot more than I do now and lots of golf.... I'll reevaluate after this next year.

Oh, and building the house on Texoma, that'll keep me occupied for awhile...

If nearly all your funds are going toward items you actually use, and not to interest and taxes, your retirement funds will stretch a lot further.

I have that box checked off......

Two years ago for me at 65. Glad I retired. I thought I may be bored, but oh no. The days fill up with things to do. Like PGR said, it is wise to have your ducks in a row prior if possible. No debt. Health insurance a big factor. Medicare for me at 65 with a Medigap plan was fairly reasonable (it can be high depending on your income, they can assess IRMMA over a certain amount), but still cheaper than open market health plans. My wife two years younger had to pay $865 mo. for BCBS high deductible. Luckily, she shifts to medicare in a few weeks. You have to sit down and figure your Expenses per month, this will be what you need to live on. Then see if you have enough investment vehicles, stocks, etc. to cover the Expenses. If you do, then retire. You can spend some time then figuring ways to invest further to make some money. Get a good Financial Advisor and Pay them if financial planning is not your forte. Paying them for their expertise, puts some of their skin in the game. One size does not fit all, I know that. Just some ideas.

Corporate Exhaustion! I have this and can't wait. But just turned 50 and working for same company for 26 years. I'm going to stick it out as long as I'm employed, hopefully 15 more years.

I retired at 62 with employer supplemented health insurance but it has gone up $100 a month per year. One of your biggest expenses will be health insurance, at least it is for me and the wife but I go on Medicare soon. Before I retired, we made sure everything was paid off like someone above said.
I don't know if you have a personal financial advisor or not, but if you do have them run the numbers and see what they way. Even if you don't you could go and visit several seeing what they offer and have them run the numbers. You don't have to move your money to them. The company I use gave me and several some real good advice, and so far he has been spot on as far as we go. Good luck, you will love being on your own schedule.

Happens much faster than you think. One day you wake up and you have gray or no hair, a dad bod with an accelerated beer gut, and your get-up-and-go just got up and went.

I'm very glad to be retired though.
