This is hypothetical. I have a friend who has a large 150+ acre lake North of Palestine Texas. Years back, the owner put about 30 grass carp in it. Now its devoid of all hydrilla and lily pads. Was wondering if somebody could catch most of them by rod and reel. Lake owner does not want them shocked nor bow hunted at night. Could you bait an area and the fish for them or how would one go about getting most of the carp out of it? Is it even legal to catch and then remove them?
If you could do this, what bait could be used to bait an area to draw in the carp?
Any ideas or suggestions would be helpful.

I do know that a permit needs to be obtained before Grass Carp can be stocked in both public and private water bodies in Texas. There are guidelines on the Texas Parks & Wildlife Web Site on how a land owner can obtain a permit. I also know the law requires that a Grass Carp be destroyed if caught on public water bodies. The only exception is, if a Grass Carp is caught from a public water body with a permit in effect. The Grass Carp can then be released back in that water body. As for private water bodies I do not know any laws or regulations on Grass Carp. I would think you can catch/destroy as many as you wanted to. You could also release them back in the same pond where you caught them. It would be against the law to relocate Grass Carp to another water body.

Range cubes or boiled feed/deer corn work best. Boil the corn until it's soft, usually takes about an hour. Range cubes are much easier and can just be tossed out right from the bag. Toss the chum out in a likely holding spot every day for 3 days or more and they'll get the hint.

Just an opinion...I think more than commons, grass carp, because they are more likely to eat floating vegetation, are prime targets for fly fishing carpers. That's not to say they will catch them quicker, just that there's a bit more sport to be had, at least initially. There are some very dedicated Texas groups that target grass carp.
