C., you just reminded me that WD40 can take out poison ivy, too. I've heard the solvent will neutralize the oil on the leaves as it kills the plant, but since my eyes get itchy just looking at the stuff, I still won't touch it with my hands, even with thick gloves on. I just spray it on and watch it wilt.

My concern on using WD40 while fishing would be what effect it has on the enviroment. Why not use scents that are made to be used on baits that are hopefully Ok to use without hurting the enviroment. WD40 could be safe to use; however, I don't know that... Any body here know the impact??

Yep, Lake Belton gets a nice sheen on it after dbones gets done with an evening of hybrid catching on WD40 soaked shrimp. I'll alert the EPA!! grin

Seriously, the environmental impact of a few folks soaking a lure or bait with the stuff in a reservior is less that negligible.

Wanna have a problem, use wd40 instead of grease or oil!

I promise you it will break down!

I also heard it attracts dust, especially on reel gears.

About 20 years ago my old fishing partner picked up a can out of the bottom of my old junkie boat and said I'll see it this will help. He spayed his worm and went to catchin good fish. And after about the 3rd one I said I think I will try some of that. We either won or cashed a check that day. We used it for worm spray after that for along time. I have not thought of this in awhile! But there was nothing that would hurt them stiff worms 20 years ago.

I don't. I have found it to be an inferior product. It is OK for household use, but for any kind of serious commercial or industrial use, it don't cut it. It attracts moisture by the way. Another poster mentioned he likes when when people use WD 40 on their garage door springs because he will be replacing them before long. This is because they will rust solid and break. I have seen many parts and components corroded and failed because some rookie mech used WD 40 on it. I have been a mechanic all my adult life, and an aircraft mechanic for the last 25 years. This is what I found to be the best products over all this time. I am sure there are a lot of good products out there, but this is what I use. For a penetrating oil that will work when all hope is lost and you have given up on loosening that frozen part or fastener, go to www.kanolaboratories.com. and purchase a can of "AeroKroil". They also make good lubricant. Another site for outstanding lubricants is http://www.triflowlubricants.com/. I use these two products in my everyday aircraft maintenance with great results.

Be carefull it will break down any oil or grease that is in your real. I even got back handed by my dad as a kid for using it on his reel. He said it would melt monofilament line. I have not prooved this but that backhand was all the proof I needed.

The bluegill would gather around and sniff/snort (whatever you call smelling underwater) the hook and they would peck at it but never take it. I sprayed WD-40 on the hook and dropped it in. The first one to smell it gulped it down. I caught several on it but I did notice that if they did not get to it quick (4-5 seconds) the smell seemed to wear off and I would have to respray the hook to get them to take it.

But you couldn't set the hook. The fish would slide off!

Steelhead and salmon anglers in Oregon and Washington used it on their baits, even though the fishing regs outlawed it's use.

4 out of 5 voices in my head say call in sick and go fishing !
