Good grief how do you guys just shove your arms down a muddy hole in the dark? I couldn't do it. Bacon and a string works well. You can even catch them in the creek that way. I used to catch them all the time but the only thing that bit them were I was from was dang drum.

Needless to say I used to have the perfect combination of fearlessness and just plain dumb.
We used to crawl through the culverts underneath I-35 in Sanger while running a small hand net along the walls. The water would be about 3/4 of the way up to the top of the culverts and there was just enough room for our heads. It was dark except for a small 2-3'opening in the median.
When we'd get across the 4 lanes of traffic we'd empty the net in a bucket and head back. We would load up on the crawdads, and the occasional turtle or bluegill. We'd also sometimes us a throw net where the ditches opened up on either side of the highway.
There is no way in hades I get down there now.

Find a good rocky streambed with around 6 to 12 inches of flowing water. Slowly lift any large rock and there's a good chance a crawfish is keeping house there. You gotta be quick and it takes practice but you can catch a mess of them that way. Great fun for the kids and you get the bait.

Hooking a fish is like playing string with a cat. The exact size, shape, color of string matters less than how you wiggle it- and little cats are easier to fool than big ones. John Gierach

Just find U store that sells them and pick You up a couple of Pounds. I know it's not the same as catching them but honestly, how many You think You can catch in a 2 hour period. Now go take 10 bucks and be done with it. Certain Albertsons or Central Market on Lovers Ln in Dallas sells them. Already tried the Bacon and String Method back in the Day. I would sent there in front of the Hole and get ticked off and then try to dig the whole Yard up. I got my @$$ chewed out by the old Man for doing it.

Don't wast your time, call around to your local meat markets and order them. Now they are seasonal, and it will take time, you may even have to get on the web and order them from La. They come from La. by the 30 lb. sack but in your frig they will last a mo. I assume you are fishing with them as is I. Don't be fooled their is no such thing as too big of a crawfish. I use them every year with amazing success. Infact I have about 3 doz. Left in my frig. that have been their for approx. 4 weeks with no fowl smell and I have not lost one. You just have to keep them moist not wet and make sure they dont become frozen. Good Luck

When I was a kid in Baton Rouge we used those green strawberry baskets and tie the bacon down on the bottom with the kite string and put a small rock in the middle for weight and leave about 2' and tie to a stick. We'd come back later and lift the baskets out and have a strawberry basket loaded with mudbugs. Kinda like crabin. Den we bring dem bugs home in toe sack an purge em in da kiddy pool. den we boil dem bugs in da big pot wit da zatran's. Aaaayeeeee.
