Exactly what I would expect from him. If you are smart you can make a fortune screwing the weak.

Can't really argue with what was said. Non-story, just more right wing republican hate from a left leaning "truth telling" website.
"I saw the story about the high bills," Patrick said. "Let me explain that. We have in Texas, you can choose your energy plan and most people have a fixed rate. If they had a fixed rate per kilowatt hour, their rates aren't going up."
"But the people who are getting those big bills are people who gambled on a very, very low rate," he continued. "But I've told those folks, do not panic. We are going to figure that out."
"But going forward, people need to read the fine print in those kinds of bills and we may even end that type of variable plan because people were surprised."

You can’t have it both ways. You can’t take advantage of the low rate and then pull the victim card when things turn against you. Life can be full of hard lessons.

It is always advisable to fully read and understand any contract you enter into. If you do not understand some parts of it get a clarification, have an attorney review it or refuse to sign off on it. Once you sign it you agree to whatever terms the contract dictates. It has always been that way.

It's like those 24mo interest free ads you see.
(fine print - if you do not pay it off or you miss a payment, you will be charged 24.99% interest for the complete purchase amount.)

I hate that this happened to people but I am of the opinion if you signed the dotted line you agreed to the terms. Sad part is this is not the first time this has happened in the real time energy market. It happened a few years back as well. Not near as bad but several folks with $1k-$2k electric bills one month.

The OP took it out of context, as one would expect. God, what a biased push of a leftist narrative.
Here is the text:
"But the people who are getting those big bills are people who gambled on a very, very low rate," he continued. "But I've told those folks, do not panic. We are going to figure that out." Patrick added: "But going forward, people need to read the fine print in those kinds of bills and we may even end that type of variable plan because people were surprised."

What too many don't understand is that not all variable rate plans were entered into as a contract. If your fixed rate plan expires and you don't catch it, the provider will default you to m-t-m variable rate. Kind of a predatory practice to not notify customers of contract expirations.

My plan defaults to another fixed rate plan from the same provider. The expiration dates are on my bill. I have received e-mails letting me know about upcoming expiration dates and my options with the electric provider. You are an idiot if you let an electric company or city water provider auto bill your bank account. They make to many mistakes that could clean out anyone's bank account. Even if they admit to a billing error, it takes time to clean it up while your house, car and insurance payments bounce.

I had my house plan (Direct Energy) expire once and it went to m-t-m variable and the same for my business (StarTex/Constellation). I now use Energy Ogre for the house and will soon for the biz.
