Heres what a plumber would do. Cut both pvc pipes 6 to 8" above ground. Get the new backflow preventer assembly, male adapters, 90s and glue the whole thing up on the ground with 2 pieces of pipe sticking down, use sch. 40. At the end just stab both pipes down on the 2 coupling you have installed on the 2 risers. If you have an underground shut off somewhere, use sch 80 glue unions instead of couplings and you can crack the union nuts to drain it down every year. Use blue glue not clear glue.

2 18" pipe wrenches, nylon thread tape, valve, pvc cleaner/glue (blue glue), pvc couplings (get 3, just in case), short pc of pvc/home depot and lowes sell 2' lengths, hacksaw or sawzall with fine tooth blade, pc of 100 grit or buy some emory cloth.
cut pvc below broken valve, using both pipe wrenches (one on valve other on flat just above to back up, do not torque on just the valve or you may cause problems), new thread tape on threads, put valve/pvc adapter together, thread on to upper and tighten (backing up again), put pvc from valve to tie back in to existing.
and yes I would suggest shutting down the main to the house for this one. or get some video.

Yes they are, but wont be needed on this repair. I think I could fit it in there. Here's an example of my repair work on a split elbow.

Advice? Wise men don't need it. Fools won't heed it.
