It's been a long time since we've had this sort of cold weather in Texas, but I remember that it used to cause fish kills in the past.

What should we expect this year?

What are the long term effects?

Cold fronts can cause fish kills. Also, remember that some areas can be closed to fishing if there are freeze warnings.

It can also push fish into deep holes.

You're going to some kill, a lot of mullet will be crab food.
But right now it's not nearly as bad as it could have been.

If memory serves correctly, cold snaps tend to kill off shallow water mangrove snapper. But they repopulate pretty quickly.

Summary from a number of guides up and down the coast regarding the cold weather and related fish kill. Seems like the kill might have been at its worse from Sargent on south to Port Mansfield. Definitely a significant kill, but maybe too early to know how significant. Some of the guides painting a pretty bleak picture on trout. Snook and mangrove snapper, forget about them for a while. Trout might take 3 years to sort of bounce back. Guides talking going catch and release and not targeting trout at all.
