I finally got a boat that can handle the SWLA terrain and I've always wanted to make a trip over there. It opens up on the 15th of March, always heard the fishing was pretty good and I want to "scratch my itch".
Anyone have any experience or suggestions?

Probably just me in the dark but I gotta ask: What & where is this SWLA that opens on March 15? What size boat do you need to “handle the terrain”? TY

It’s the lassacine wild life refuge in south west Louisiana. It’s a little past lake Charles. 40 hp max.... My last do it all boat had a 60 on it. Last fall I picked up a 2060 godevil with a 35hp on it. Should be able to get around down there pretty good in it. Lots of shallow water, grass, pads etc...

I have a buddy who lives close to it and has caught several 10+. It's not as good as years past as lots of guys keep the good fish out there, typical Louisiana stuff. Good sight fishing and frog fishing. Very shallow

Got it. Caddo without boat lanes? Prolly not a 21’ Ranger place then. Sounds super cool.

I'm from a little town just north of there. I think the horse power rating is a max of a 40 horse now. In places like in the curves are supposed to be idle only so not to run over anyone. I would ran a 1640 aluminum tunnel with a 25 hp outboard. I would also recommend having a push pole. Years past there were people camped out the night before opening day waiting for it to open. It can get very shallow once you get out of the cannels. The fishing can be good if you know were to go and there are some big bass in that marsh.

Interesting looking place. Looks like the intercostal waterway cuts right through the southern edge of the NWR. Is that brackish water in there?

The intercoastal is not part of it, it is across the south levee. It's a fresh water marsh.

I've fished, launching south of Hackberry. It was OK. I like marsh fishing and I've done it quite a bit when I used to live just north of Sabine Lake. Had quite a honeyhole in the McFaddin NWR.
