ok me and my bro were fishing from a dock at lake texoma. when he hooks in to a momster. we got it up till about 2 feet under the water. we could see it was for sure a carp or some kind of rough fish. it was ATLEAST 4 feet long. and had an enormous girth.
any ideas what kind of carp get this big? it was atleast 50-60 pounds.

It may have been a white amur or a buffalo.
If it was truly a common carp I doubt it was 4 feet long, considering the state record at just about 44lbs is "only" 38" long or so.
And the Enormous Girth would be much more likely to be a buffalo then a carp.
Smallmouth Buffalo get over 90lbs in Texas.

yeah texoma has some buffs in that range easy... do you remember what color it was? what was your brother using for bait? that could help determine what it may of been.

we were using striper parts. like meat, intestines and stuff. im not 100% sure of the color. it was about 3 feet under, and it looked whitish. maybe thats just because i saw its belly?

Common Carp are bronze, from back to belly. And they have red/orange tails.
Buffalo are sometimes very pale, but more often, bluish or greyish, and with a pale belly.
There are so many species in Texoma it could have been anything.

I catch alot of buffalo and the colors you said match a buffs colors. How did it fight? Did it make a lot of long powerfull runs or just like dead weight with a powerfull run here and there? Did the colors look like this? Here is a pic of a Smallmouth buffalo. Or this? heres a pic of the world record common carp. GG

it looked just like that smallmouth buffalo. and according to my brother. it just felt like dead weight untill it got about 3 feet fromthe surface. then it fought harder then any fish hes cought in his life.

Definitely a Smallmouth Buffalo though.
They're typical...carp fight insanely hard as soon as you hook them, buffalo just sit there often, until they see you, then they go crazy.

we almost never fish for carp, we were going for catfish. but after that heck of a fight. i just may try carp more often. that thing made a 10 pound striper fight seem sissy

Yeah, and if you hook a true Common Carp, he will put that buffalo to shame in a heart beat!

Yeah. That's the whole reason I got addicted to fishing for them in the first place, the way they fight!
As documented in the TPWD 2006-2007 Regulations Handbook, carp can often strip off well over 100 yards of drag in a single run, and they often make a LOT of runs!

lol... looks like we just converted another one. we should add a sticky thread warning people they might become addicted, and or obsessed.
