We also have an 18 yo that is special needs.
If I could tell parents of special needs kids one thing it would be to Overpraise good behavior (as in have a party or special event) when they do something good and ignore bad behavior. I raised our son with autism since he was a baby. I didn't coddle him at all and gave him lots of tough love. I don't know if my wife could have ignored some of the stuff he and I battled over when he was younger.
However, now he is a responsible young man. He drives himself to school every day, he was the lead role in his school play, has a black belt in Tung Su Do, was outstanding Christian leader for his school and star running back. He just recently was accepted to ATM, all this despite being told by the Dr. who diagnosed him "not to expect too much"
Don't give up on special needs kids they just might surprise you!
