A generator safety lock-out kit for you home's main panel would cost about 15% of what the transfer switch would cost. It would have the benefit of letting you choose whatever circuits you want to be hot - up to the capability of your generator, of course. You'd still need the power inlet box and a cable, but much simpler - see texcajun's post.

Without a doubt, the biggest reason I bought mine was for hurricanes. Living down here along the coast, thru Rita, Ike, and Harvey, this thing has been a lifesaver. Now I can add winter storms to the mix. Fortunately, she was only needed for 4 hours on Monday.

I now have have generator envy and will buy one once the shelves get stocked back up.

I have the set up like texcajun with the external “inlet” and the lockout. Running the 6500 Predator. Has served me well the last few days.

Those that think this was a fluke or a 100 year storm are welcome to think that way, but spending several nights huddled up in one room covered in blankets trying to stay warm and 10* outside temp is no joke.
Texas has seen rapid and enormous growth from people moving here and subdivisions popping up everywhere that the normal utilities are not able to keep up with it, so i look for the same thing happening in the summer when usage outlasts the supply for the A/C.

And knowing what I know now about where we live in relation to areas that have essential business like hospitals, we're at the bottom of the priority list when it comes to restoring power. I can't count how many times we've lost power since we moved here in 13 but this one did it for me. I'm not shopping for one right now this instant, but I believe I'll be looking for one over the next few months.

You folks in line to buy a generator, do yourself a favor and spend a lil extra to help keep it running for a long time.

Don't put a load on it, during breakin.
Do change to synthetic oil once broke in.
And, I suggest adding a magnetic drain plug before the 1st pull and for it's life.
