Short answer is they could built excess power generation plants to use in emergency situations like we have today.
Add it to your electric Bill each month for the next 20-30 years and listen to Us complain about the cost. If Texas did not have a closed grid system to avoid complying with Federal regulations we would have been past this day one.
Do you know why we don’t take any Bass home when we fish Welsh? Why is it such a great winter time fishery?
Because they contain Mercury from the coal used to fire the Welsh Plant, it’s a by product that goes out of the smoke stack with the steam.
Maybe they could have used all of the shuttered power plants as "back up" facilities.

Yet looking at the uptime of power plants in the Midwest where it is colder than Texas they seem to have no issues. I guess their customers pay 1000’s more a year than us.
Oh wait, Texas has some of highest rates in the country.
Rick Perry said “Texans will gladly take 3 days of no power to be off Federal oversight”.
Face it, our bravado overloaded our hummingbird [censored].

I am willing to bet serious money that when this all said and done....very little if anything will be done or change. It will be called a "once in 20 year event" and none of the energy suppliers will do anything about winterizing their equipment. Oh the politicians will call for investigations, have a committee formed to "study" the problem and that will be it. Nobody honestly thinks that our esteemed political "leaders" will step up and institute changes that might cost the energy companies money do you..?? This will make the news cycles for a while and then we'll be back to some other "problem" that will appear and that will be that.
The only way to effect change is to hurt the energy companies where it hurts...in their pocket. But that won't happen because most of us don't have the time to organize and put forth the effort needed to influence our so-called leaders or to take on the energy conglomerates. So we will see this same thing happen again...maybe not next year or the year after but it will happen and we will go thru this same problem all over again and bitch about it but nothing will have changed. And if we keep shutting down power generation plants because they are not "green" enough the problem will just get worse.

My first post after 42 hours without power or cell service. Didn’t have water for 30 hours. We have 3 kids all under 8 years old. We have a generator and it was slightly uncomfortable but good God you’re all a bunch of snowflakes after reading all the complaints. Try to grab your nuts every once in a while to make sure their still attached.

But you have nuts, thats cool I guess

The fact is the small percentage of solar and wind we need right now failed. I’ve been without power and cell service for 48 hours and I’m tired of all the excuses!! Now sitting in ihop trying to warm up. This article sums it up folks! https://energytalkingpoints.com/texas-electricity-crisis/
