and coal fired plants you just throw some more coal in to light those burners up. You never have to worry about ice shutting you down from pipe lines or anything else because they would have mountains of coal just waiting.

It comes in on conveyor belts then gets pulverized into dust and then blown through a burner. It produces some intense heat.

I pretty sure this is not a problem as wind and sun are filling the void. And how much are the generating today? Six megawatts. Wind power has dropped from 31 megawatts to 6 megawatts due to blades icing.

My brother works for the NRG Power Plant east of Groesbeck and took this pic Monday. They fired the coal burners up a few days ago when asked to. He mentioned that these big units just don't go into operation with the flip of a switch. We both worked on constructing the plant when it was HL&P. He stayed on and has been there ever since. I think it's NRG now, it was Reliant for the longest. Do a google map search in the satellite view of Lake Limestone and look at all the gas pads north of the lake. Limestone aka: LEGS. I used to work there when it was owned by Houston Industries. I worked for UFI, Utility Fuels Inc, we operated the fuel handling system. Yes, they do not come online easily. Temps, pressures all have to be equalized & balanced as well as the flame from the coal.
Reality. What a concept!

More Power Plant Trivia? : The steam pressure in a land based power plant it typically 3,000 PSI. Navy ships ran anywhere from 1, 800 to 2,100 PSI, but there aren't many steam powered ships left. All gone to diesel or gas turbine.
How about the Nukes, they use steam to turn the screws. Correct me if i'm wrong, but are they not the latest and greatest at this time? You are correct. Nuke doesn't burn anything.
I'm glad there are wine drinkers in this world ..... it saves more beer for the rest of us. Hopper

I say again.....thorium fueled molten salt nuclear reactors! Thousands of them!
What's not to love?
Cheap, scalable, manufactured vice built, safe! Even transportable.
Look! Up in the sky. It's a bird. It's a plane. No, it's an EMP!

You never have to worry about ice shutting you down from pipe lines or anything else because they would have mountains of coal just waiting. Unless something has changed over the years, they start up on NG Igniters and then induce the coal dust. At least that is the way ours started up. We also had problems with wet coal creating a frozen plug coming out of the hoppers. One time they bought some "cheap" lignite to burn, it had so much dirt in it that it froze into a huge chunk. We spent hours around the clock hammering on the side of the hoppers above the pulverizers to empty them out. Dang, I don't miss those cold nights up in the air.

Gibbons Creek is owned by TMPA, which was mothballed in 2019, if I remember correctly. Coleto Creek is projected to go off line in 2027.

Gibbons creek, Grimes county Big Brown, Freestone county JT Deely, Bexar county Monticello, Titus county Oklaunion, Wilbarger county Sandow, Miliam county Eagle Mountain, Tarrant county Paint creek, Haskell county PH Robinson, Galveston county
The above represents 9600+ mWh capacity permanently removed from our state power grid.
Someone with more knowledge on the subject would have to comment for impact & accuracy. From the little I know that 9600+ mWh capacity permanently removed from our state power grid is about 3.8 - 6 million homes worth of power.
Tradinghouse Creek, E of Waco North Lake, Coppell Valley, Fannin county Decker Creek/ W.E Long, Austin Holly street, Austin
More permanatly lost electric grid capacity. I couldn’t find lost output figures on these.
That is all I know of off the top of my head.
