Local guy charges $27/hour to paint house. I pay for paint at his discount price.

I would prefer a fixed price...but this is how local painters charge.

This price high/low or about right?

Not a bad price at all if he works at a decent pace.

Which house did you go with. The one in Tennessee?

No....I went with the one in my old neighborhood. No good roads down to TN places....made it 1.5 hours or so away.

Are you talking about "white walls" painting, or "DaVinci-type murals" painting?

Yeah it kind of depends on his pace! It doesn’t sound too bad but I would rather pay by the job. Then it’s on him to get done in a timely fashion. If he doesn’t then that’s on him and not you.

it's to cold to paint.

$27/hour is not bad if he stays steady painting and doesn't lolligag.

Here is a tip. Write the room name on every paint can. If you need to repaint in the future, you have the paint can with the name of the rom written on the side. It would also be smart to keep a file with paint colors chosen and the paint sample card.

Ask him how long he thinks it will take to do the job.

Contractors that only want to be paid by the hour are gonna take as many hours as they can...I'd ask him how many hours a home like yours would take...and agree to a number. Then hold him to it.

We take pictures on our phone of the color and brand, which has helped.

Thats the difference between a contractor and an owner.

I used to paint for $40 hr. (Supplies extra, roll and brush, no spray) and did a lot of it, but my customers knew me. I would give them an app. time frame which included caulking and any obvious repair and always finished within it or less time unless there were unforeseen issues. Get some references before agreeing to this!!! It sounds like a very reasonable price from my experience.
