I just got a little 15’ bass boat and I’m trying to set my own limits. What do you feel comfortable taking on? What’s your wind tolerance in a bass boat? When you check the forecast at what point do you decide not to go? Thanks for your input.

The issue should always be safety first. Wind speed is only one factor in the equation. I have fished in small boats in 30 mph wind in protected coves, but in lakes with a big fetch 15 to 20 mph can be unsafe. Wind direction is also an issue. Running with the wind is much safer than traveling in a cross wind. Your skill as a driver also makes a difference in what your boat can safely take. Remember, as the captain of a boat you are responsible for your passengers safety. The best way to find your limits is to start small (10 to 15 mph) and work your way up as you become familiar with the boat. And always wear your life jacket. If I had a 15' bass boat I wouldnt be out in a big lake with winds over about 10 mph. Unfortunately that is most days in Texas. However, there are many big lakes that have protected coves that you can fish all day in and never hit the same water twice. A great example would be to launch in the back of Little Caney on Lake Fork. And there are many smaller Texas lakes that dont get hammered as much by wind such as Cypress Springs or Lake Gilmer. Be safe.

Down load the "WindFinder" app for your phone. It's pretty accurate. A forecast of more than 10 mph should be the lmit.

I use this web site to determine if I am fishing or not. On the lake in rough water is no fun to anyone and getting the boat back on the trailer can also be a pain on a windy day.

But a footer, on Tawakoni is a big no.

Most times you will be forced to stay close to the ramp,
with the wind as your friend , to get back to the ramp.
