Well, my better half says “I want to go fishing around Port A, so can we go shopping for rods & reels”?

Now, I’ve done a lot of freshwater fishing (bass catfish and bream), but am kinda at a loss for what makes a good saltwater inshore rig...and of course I want my better half to think that I know what I’m doing...!

So, do you have any suggestions for a good saltwater inshore set-up?

I’m pretty much a working man, so price can’t be beyond $200 or so for the rod & reel together.

Let me know what you think...

I use a 6500 ambassador reel on a 6’6” ugly stick MH rod almost all the time I fish with a rod and reel inshore. I have only been spooled twice. One time was a big jack crevelle I could not chase out the jetty mouth because of the weather and the other time was a 10’ plus hammerhead I hooked from the jetty. roflmao I have landed a 150 pound sandbar shark with it, although it took a long long time and a lot of chasing.

The reels are normally $149 and the rods are $40. Or you can get one cheaper on EBay.

Lures or bait? Flats/bay or jetties?
Your bass gear is fine for anything swimming in the bay. We typically use a lighter action because you can cast further and nothing is going to snag a fish up so lighter drag and let them run.

We don't throw meat, so can't advise on that, but..
Jig head w/plastics are rigged on 7-7 1/2' spinning rods with 2500 sized reels, L/ML action, 20# power pro braid.
Topwater/spoons 6 1/2 or 7' casting rods M or ML action, 15# Ande back country mono. Mostly 4600 ambassador or Quantum reels.
Everything gets rinsed and lubed, some of my rigs are 15 years old and still working fine. Let stuff sit after a good brine soaking and you'll be replacing it.
