About mid Jan it got tough... only a handful of bites in a full day of fishing. That weird algae bloom up in the creeks kinda changed things a little this year. If you get bit it’s probably going to be a good one, but you may fish 5 hours in between bites.

Never fished RR before and thinking of hitting there for spring break with my son. How is it for navigating for a newbie? Is it similar to Rayburn where one side (south) is wide open but then other side is all timber and gotta be careful. Or do you have to have a chip for boat lanes like Fork?
We live near Houston and fish conroe, fayette, houston, and rayburn. With him off school we were thinking of trying somewhere new.

No trail chips here. Once you go beyond the telephone poles into any pocket or North of them on the east arm of the lake you are in submerged timber. March is a great time to come, fish get mean and shallow then if the water has warmed to the high 50s low 60s. If you like camping there are two very nice State Parks to choose from both with good ramps. Johnson Branch can be a booger to launch in a steady South wind. Come on up, you will either love or hate RR after a week here.

See you on the lake and have a great day!

Honestly I would just go a little further and go to Texoma. You can catch some smallmouth and good largemouth, and if things hit the fan you can probably catch some stripers. If your really wanting to hit RR I can’t speak for the west side but things get pretty stumpy when you pass the island on the east side

I would fish Lick and Walnut in March. Plenty of drains and good spawning area's.
Easy to get to also. If your feeling more adventurous north of the bridge in Isle du bois is
also good in March. The water is dirty in Isle du bois arm and warms up faster.
A jar of white Pork-O's in Lick and Walnut in the 90's during the spawn would keep a smile
on your face for weeks!
