I'm looking at buying a 2015 boat with a 2015 Mercury 250 Pro XS 2 stroke. The motor has 323 hours and no warranty. I know there is a risk to buying without warranty. How comfortable would you be with this engine? What to look out for?

Compressor seems like the big thing on these motors. I would make sure the seller had yearly service done as well and could provide the proof or his mechanic could provide the proof of service.

Buy it contingent on a compression test.

Wouldn't worry much. That's a healthy number of hours for a 2015. My 2013 200hp pro xs has 560. I've started having lower-unit seals and gaskets up top replaced for minor leaking. Also having new reeds installed as a precaution (the 200's came with steel reeds that will likely kill the engine when they fail). That 250 you're looking at has carbon fiber reeds already so no need in messing with them till one breaks (they won't hurt the engine when they break, just makes it run weaker).

Like the other said, verify compression test and buy with confidence.

Thanks for getting back to me. Assuming parts availability for this engine will not be a problem?

There are millions of Mercury 2 stroke XS’s in the world. Parts will continue to be produced! (OK, I made that number up but I bet there’s about millions out there!) One of the 250’s is in my garage. laugh

Best advice on any motor is spend a couple hundred bucks to have a good tech give it the once over. Compression check would be my first test. Motors have changed allot and technology has helped them be more dependable. When i bought my first boat, I had a boat shop check it out. He said once he cleaned out the dirt dobbers it was a good engine. I asked for his advice on anything that he would recommend, he said for 70 bucks he would remove the oil injection and goto manual mix. The weak link in the older merc was a oil injection pump going south and blowing the power head. He pointed to a row of boats along the fence that needed rebuilds. That was valuable and probably the only reason my old motor is still running. If the price is right, and checks out you are as lucky as anybody buying a motor. Also, if you know the seller, how does he drive? Is he a zero to 100% on every move from spot to spot, or is he a laid back driver.. Not too many laid back drivers in a bass boat any more. Good luck, and get insurance on whatever you choose. Keep us updated.
