Wife buys the Costco brand EVOO. We put it on pretty much everything we cook and it taste pretty good too me. There are some $30 bottles out there that I can't imagine buying, this stuff is good enough for what we use it for. A simple EVOO salad dressing or she buys the Central Market frozen baguettes and we dip the (warmed up) bread in the olive oil and ground pepper, it's probably the easiest way to get a tablespoon daily. Although I wouldn't recommend eating a loaf of bread to get your EVOO, sounds kinda counterproductive to your doctor's orders, but a piece or two couldn't hurt.

It’s a [censored] shoot whether the olive oil you buy is “extra virgin” or not, even in Italy. There is very little control and olive oil producers pretty much do what they like and are very loose with their labels. We buy California Olive Ranch because it was always highly rated, but even they have started to produce blends with oil they have little control over. We bought some Trader Joe brand last time we were there and it has proven to be pretty good.

Central market used to have a tasting station where they had some plain french bread and 6-8 different olive oils to sample. Not sure we'll ever get this back now in the age of corona.
It really is amazing how much different one tastes from the other. It doesn't matter much if you are cooking with it, but if you are using it for salad dressing or to dip bread it is a game changer. As a general rule, stay away from the larger bottles. Get a 1 liter bottle that costs in the $8-10 range and it should be pretty good. You'll find that it actually tastes like olives.

Ok, I'm confused. Are we looking for the best, or just average?

The Olive OilerHead to downtown Fort Worth and make an afternoon out of it! Talk oils, then go next door to the cigar bar and enjoy a stogie...then who knows!

Vomm Fass in Plano or Frisco. Big selection. I use a ton of it in cooking.
