I knew it was serious but never knew how bad. I broke my heel in late 2009. They had to wait 5 weeks to fix it due to fracture blisters and infection risk. They put in 7 pins, a plate, and 2 3" screws. 5 months later staph set in and I had 2 cut and drains in 4 days. They cut out a 2x4 patch of dead skin and flesh. I wore a wound pump for 5 weeks afterwards. One of the home care nurses that changed my bandages got out this mesh strip. I asked her what it was for. She said to cover the ligament do you want to see it. I said nope. In addition to wound pump I had a line in my arm to my heart to deliver antibiotics daily. When I left the hospital after the skin grafts the ICU nurse told my sister to make sure I follows doctors instructions or I would lose foot. Not quite was Alex Smith went through but made me queasy seeing that.

I saw his 30 for 30 and the pix of his leg was gruesome.

It's pretty much a miracle that Alex Smith can even walk.

His comeback is remarkable, and his wife is a smoke show.

Yeah, I don’t want to see it again it was so bad. His comeback is truly remarkable and I hope he hangs the cleats up and goes on with his life.

Awesome to see him come out the other side of all he went through and start this year. He seems like a great guy and family man. Crazy what his leg looks like now and that he can even walk.

I do not like Washington but found myself rooting for Smith, pretty much a miracle that he is playing ball.
