Consider specifying the work hours. I am sure you will give the company their time but it would be nice to have it understood that you will be there til 5 on Friday afternoon and 7AM on Monday but not on the same weekend. Travel will go alot better if you can start the journey home at noon on Friday and leave early on Monday morning to be on site say at 10AM or so. Good point. When I did it I was out at 7 on Monday and normally home by 5 on Friday. I did not mind travel so much except when something came up. My ex had a miscarriage while I was away and I had to scramble to get home before my mom passed.

I've been traveling for work since I graduated high school. No biggie.
Travel home on the weekends and make that money son!

Suck it up buttercup. I’ve been working 350 miles from home for over four years now. Go home once a month.
Of course, I trust my wife. Is that an issue?

So my name got thrown in the hat to go down to San Antonio to head up 2 big data center projects kicking off soon. Don't really know any of the details yet except that it would be for "4 to 6 months". The higher ups are working on a "travel package" right now but I dont know any of the details. I'm guessing it will include accommodations, travel expenses and pay incentives. I talked to my wife and if the money is right she is on board. But I'm not sure how much money would be "worth it". How do I go about evaluating that? We're in the first year of our first home purchase and only the 2nd year of our marriage (but no kids). Not sure how I feel about leaving for 6 months, even if I could come home on weekends. SA is a long ways for weekend trips.
What does the OT have to say about extended work travel? Man I wouldn't have a problem at all being in SA (would prefer New Braunfels) for 6 months or so working! As long as those 6 months were not April - September!

My wife went to Norway for a 6-week assignment and ended up being there for 5 months. I did not mind and neither did she and besides, they paid for her hotel plus $400 week per deim, they furnished breakfast and lunch at the office, she only had to pay for dinner and entertainment. We made out good on her trip but there was no way we could travel back and forth the weekend. That sounds like something neither me nor my wife would pass up!

Your job is pieces of your life that you sell to your employer at a price far less than it is worth. JM2C. I turned down a much much much higher salary because it would have taken me away from my kids.

If you were working for my company, we would rent you a furnished apartment or condo and pay for Southwest flights for you or your wife. No sense in sending 10 hours driving on the road most weekends. We would also give you a daily per diem.

Go for it. Did it years ago and we had a ball. Saw parts of the country I would have never got to see, wife flew in a couple times a month. Didn't have kids so all we had to worry about was getting the dog fed...:) You only live once...ask for some crazy salary, lots of bennies...all they can do is say no...:) Do it now before you have kids....you won't regret it.

Do it on the regular myself.
Spent over a year getting our Houston branch turned around with young kids at home. I trust my wife and she trusts me, don’t put yourself in situations that something bad can happen and you’ll be alright. One thing that really helped was a 3-4 day weekend to recharge everyone’s batteries without deducting any of my vacation time.
Constantly still traveling to Austin, San Antonio and Houston still but more like week at a time stuff. Flying never made sense to me, by the time you get to the airport early fly and get a rental car you’d dang near be there already and have your vehicle and mileage to write off for tax purposes.
Good luck with whatever you decide.

As someone who chased the oilfield all over the world for nearly 40 years, I think it's a no brainer. Make it financially worthwhile and just do it. The last few times I took assignments out of the Gulf of Mexico, I required them to pay me 147 hours per week (OT after 40), all expenses, etc. Helped pay off the house and set me up to retire at 59 1/2.

Thanks for the all the insight folks. When I get more information, I'll give an update. The other guy in consideration lives in Austin so he's a lot closer, I'm just not sure he has the experience they want. But his close proximity might be the determining factor.

If you do come down I have a boat. Can't catch Sh:t but can be a tour guide. If you want to see some big a$$ gators Choke is not far off.
