There are a few decent restaurants in East Texas, but it's no place for a foodie. One of my favorite things about being on the road is going to good restaurants. I live out here for the lifestyle.

The best part of my meal was the hot towel afterward.

I got a single meat plate with sliced brisket. Brisket was cold, dry, and no flavor.

Coworker had two meat plate. He's from up north where they lack taste buds.

And.......$53.00 for the above, a sweet tea and an ice water.

Terrible.

Stanley’s is not even close to what it use to be. I believe the pitmaster is now at the original Bodacious on Mobberly in Longview.

That too bad, I grew up eating at Stanley's. The bodacious on mobberly was near grandmothers house are there everytime we visited.

You appear to have been to casual with your list. I wish you would have labeled it “tentative” or some such before posting.

I have been here in East Texas for the past five years and, for the most part, it is an eating wasteland. My go to BBQ place is Smoke Monkey on 155 in Flint. The original is in Rockwall. While BBQ is a personal thing, these guys are pitmasters and catered presidential dinners for both Bush's and for a few governors. They have great brisket, pulled pork and ribs as well as what are probably the best beans I have ever tasted.

For the most part, though, the majority of BBQ, burger and Mexican restaurants are mediocre. Each area may have one or two good places but they are few and far between.

East Texas was bbq hell for years, but it is getting better. Of course, the original Bodacious in Longview is back to where it was in the 70’s. Darrell’s bbq in Center can be very good. Brendyn’s bbq here in Nacogdoches may be the best of all of them.

Now here’s a smart man. I love Riverport, agree with Bodacious being the best in East Texas. Someone spoke about burgers, Jucy’s is a dam good burger in Longview or Fueglers in Harleton. Docs for hot links in Gilmer even though with new owner they’re not as good, Pizza King on 80 for pizza and I’m a fan of Papacitas and Lupe’s on Highway 80 for Mexican food.

I guess I happen to be in the right place. The Bodacious in Hallsville is just 3.5 miles, with the original only 8 miles, as for Jucy's it is just a short 6.5 mile run with Pizza King only 5.5 miles away. Fugler's Grocery and Market for a Bubba Burger is around 21 miles so it has to just be one of those because I was in the neighborhood. I will have to go and give Riverport a try.

Apparently. They should change their name. Their ribs might be good, but their BBQ sucks
