The PFD that came with my kayak is one of the orange bulky ones. I need to upgrade and wanted some input from others. Looking for something more comfortable and a sleeker design. What are yalls thoughts on inflatables?

I don't like the inflatable PFDs. Some people do like them. I heard from one guy that he liked it until he flipped his kayak in cold water and the inflatable pillows on the front of his PFD made it really difficult to get back into his kayak.
I like white water PFDs because they allow more movement. Look at NRS. They are not cheap but I keep my PFDs longer than my kayaks.

I am a big fan of the NRS Chinook. I've used one for several years and it's very comfortable and does the job.

I have two different NRS Chinooks: reg one and an offshore when I carry a marine radio. They are hard to beat. No inflatables for me. I don't want to guess whether or not it will really work if I flip my boat. NRS Chinook / OSThey go on sale, so shop around.

so my thoughts 1) I don't like inflatables... mostly because I want something that floats every time, all the time. I know inflatables are very good/reliable... but i just prefer something that floats by nature - not nurture  2) I like/love nrs chinook but it is expensive - just got one this past year for myself. 3) I/Family uses ski vests (usually neoprene wrapped) for most of our kayaking. They are comfortable - typically cheaper than kayak specific ones (usually - especially if you get on sale) and work. You can also find them a lot more easily. One advantage to the ski vests - they usually have back padding/floatation - so if you have a hard kayak seat back - it adds some extra cushioning.

I have to say, I am on my second nrs chinook, first I had the older model now I have the newer design. The newer design is nice but the zippers are terrible. Both of my pocket zippers are busted and now neither pocket will close, also they moved the belly clip inside the vest making it much harder to get to. Personally im going to look into some different options. I like the ...not sure the spelling...stoloquist pfd with the harder front pockets.

The biggest problem with vests that are not design to paddle in, they make longer trips uncomfortable for many. If you are looking for a value paddling vest, I actually bought one of these for friends to use when they borrow a boat from me and we go out together. Wear a vest or we don't go together. This is the one I use when in the Yak. Now when I am in the Ranger I use a Mustang Elite Inflatable or a Mustang vest type if it is during Winter.

I currently use an old Extrasport Osprey that I think is no longer available. I feel lost anytime I 'm fishing without it on. Several pockets and D-rings perfect for a Gerber needle nose multi-plier. A pocket for whatever. Another pocket perfect for the SS J frame.
