I have an old center console 1992 blazer bay in well used but ok condition. Some softness in the flooring that will need to be fixed sooner than later. The motor is a 1998 evenrude 130 that is just worn out. The motor runs but compression is getting low. Starting to hiss on idle and smokes like crazy on start up. The motor has a ton of hours so it’s likely worn out.
Is the motor worth rebuilding or is rebuilding a 30 plus year old motor not a good idea. Is repowering the boat a better idea or am I just throwing good money after bad?
Replacing the boat is not an option at this time. But maybe in a couple years

How much of the work can you do yourself? If you can do most of it, you may be better off having it rebuilt. I specifically mean the disassembly down to the powerhead itself and reassembly.

What are the compression numbers on the cylinders?

I can do most of the work myself. I’ll have to bust out the standard wrenches but I bet I can do almost all of it. No compression check yet.

find a 2 stroke in whatever hp the hull is rated for, with all the new 4 strokes they are available for decent prices and will be better than a rebuilt rude since they are no longer built.

determine how much of the hull work you can do, if most or all then rehab what you have. I found then built my champion but the hull was pristine and engine runs excellent so it was mostly updating everything.
