So a 19 yo smashed his SUV into a huge power pole right behind my house and died...not right behind, but less than 100 yards away.

Kid died instantly. I heard what sounded like a sonic boom. So sure it was that, since it shook the windows, I did not go out and look until a moment later I heard the sirens. It was clear no one could have lived. The lack or urgency on the part of the firefighters was pretty telling that no one was alive. I did not like watching, I left as soon as it was clear what the situation was.

So now there are some roses there on the pole, burned grass, melted plastic and the car battery half burned. For reasons I am not sure of they left that battery half burned sitting there. Its an AC Delco. Can still read the label well. Suppose its a hazardous deal and someone certified will come pick up at some point.

See now that pole is just a long baseball throw from my house... I see it from my backyard. It feel creepy AF for some reason.

PS this pole is right at a 4 way stop, there was no way the driver was going to stop or even try to stop. Based on the SUV and the damages and the sound it made, I have to think he was going 65+ as he was about to blow the 4 way stop intersection, this is a 35MPH zone, its not a major street... I thought, well maybe there was car there in the intersection, and the hand of god moved that SUV to hit that pole and saved the lives of a family or something... like is that even a thing? Does god work like that?

IDK, the whole thing is creepy.

People die and are born every second or two on this planet.

Being at the scene where someone died will make you feel creepy. That's just natural emotion and sorry you had to witness that.

It’s natural to feel that way. Every time you see the spot, say you’re sorry (as in sorry that it happened). It’ll help and eventually it’ll be ok.

Plus in your line of work, you see that all the time. Like firefighters and Police. Us regular folks, we do not see people die very often. Especially so young and so violently and needlessly... and right behind my dinning room for petes sakes.

All I know for sure is, I wont ever drive by that pole (which I do everyday about) and not think about how quickly it can all be over... Cant remember who said it, maybe a professor, but I recall being told spending 30 seconds to a min a day thinking about dying or death, is actually healthy. Like mentally its a good thing to do. Not sure I buy that, but now I have a daily prompt to practice that.

It's only gonna creep you out for the next 5-7yrs, every time you pass by that spot.

That is pretty creepy, a life was lost. Hard not to take it seriously. There will probably be a memorial setup there, which I remember being pretty controversial here. I lost my Dad when I was 19 in car wreck so I get it.

Yeah that sucks Brett. Sorry about your pops. Lost my Dad when I was just a bit older than you were.. but he was sick, had been, we knew it was coming for a while. Something very different when its unexpected I am sure.

Memorial I would be ok with. If nothing might remind some kid who see's it to slow the heck down... and it would not be just the dirty secret of those handful of us who saw it about what happened there, at that pole, just a few days before Christmas.

Yes, I too know what you mean. My cousin and I used to chase the volunteer fire and rescue vehicles when we were 16, just for the excitement of it. Nothing else to do in a small rural town. Until that one night when we saw death up close, the result of a tanker truck squashing a VW bus with a family inside. That imagery was burned into our brains. I didn't sleep for a week at least and 50 years later I can still recall that scene.

Natural feeling. Time heals all!

Our next door neighbor hung herself in her wedding dress.. from our living room balcony, you could see her. Our vaulted ceilings had glass all the way to the second floor. She had the same
Floor plan but “180ed” from ours. Our balcony windows faced here. She tied a rope around her neck and peterpanned over her balcony. I didn’t see it personally, but my mom and dad did.

That house took a while to sell, and I was always wondering if the new owners knew the backstory on that house. I imagine they got a good deal.

I guess my point is...

You didn’t cause it, you couldn’t have prevented it. It happens. I’m sure, simply driving down the highway, I pass spots where lives were lost about every 1/4 mile.
