One thing to keep in mind is anything over 100 proof bourbon, let it breathe 10 minutes and ad 3 or 4 drops of water and the taste will come out so much better.

No luck on Old Crow or Eagle Rare locally. Will pick up some Evan Williams Black and Woodford next time I make a stop.

I was not a fan of bottom shelf Early Times. How does the BIB compare?

Saw a bottle years later and gave it a try. Not bad, around $20.

The OGD 114 isn't too bad at all

Nastyyyyyyy stuff IMO. Taste close to gasoline.

I've never got any ethanol taste or nose from BT. I find it pretty boring though

It’s night and day.
Bottom shelf Early Times (a favorite of my college roommate) is one note, thin corn sugar—similar to Beam white label
Early Times BiB has significantly more complexity with citrus and toasted brown sugar caramel followed by a slight charred oakiness
At $25 for a liter, difficult to beat for value.

Fun trivia: Biff in Back to the Future spiked the punch at the highschool dance with Early Times.
Early Times was the best selling whisky in America in the 40s and early 50s.

Wild Turkey 101 is by far my favorite cheap stuff

I love Makers 46 but find all the other Makers too light and boring. Four Roses SB, Russell Reserve 10, Elijah Craig SB, Knob Creek, Woodford, and 1792 are all easy to find and decent around the same price. I like a few much more than the others.

Many people love Larceny. It's one you might try. Something I'm not fond of pokes out a bit too much in it for me.

Evan Williams BIB and OGD 114 are cheap and decent.

Buffalo Trace is very uniform and boring imo. But still good for what it is like Makers.

Evan Williams was and still is a very good cheap whiskey. When I started drinking it it was $4.95 a fifth. Not EW Black.

Current cheap but good line up
I realize the El Dorado 12yo rum isn’t whisky, but it might be the best tasting liquor I’ve had for under $30

Popped the Maker's Mark back open last night. The first glass was like my last experience. The spice taste started out great and then became a little too much. It starts to overpower my pallet. Then it sort of mellowed with the second glass. It definitely started to grow on me. I can understand why you would like it if you prefer a bolder, more complex taste. This bottle sure won't go to waste.

And CCTX, been wanting to add some rum to the equation. I'll have to check it out along with the WT101....eventually. Sampling beer sure is a lot quicker. wink

Thanks all!

Most work their way up to the higher proof stuff over time. I like mine bold and high proof. Let the 46 sit for 10 minutes or so. Take a few sniffs before you take a drink. Try a drop or two of water after that.
