I’m just beginning to get into carp fishing as there are a lot around me, and I’m curious, what is a typical catch rate for these guys? Should expect one every 30 min as catfish guys do or less or more time?

It will vary based upon what body of water you're fishing, time of year, and whether or not you've chummed and how much you've chummed. It can be as fast as you can get a rod in the water, with double ups and triple ups (best I've done is 7 on at once) or as slow as one fish every day or so. Usually lakes with fast action have smaller fish and slow lakes have larger, but it's not always the case!

Catch and release. The dream - to catch one of every species of Freshwater fish in our great state! If only I can resist Carp...

I have had numbers days at Joe Pool and at Lake Quitman. Lake Arlington has been good to me at Bowman Springs Park. But as stated those are primarily small to medium sized fish lakes.

Ah! thanks guys! I was being told that a carp every two hours was doing dang good by a few other guys, so I wanted to make sure that wasn't necessarily the case before I start learning. A carp every two hours would be a very slow learning curve!

After a flood, when there was lots of trash floating, I caught 27 carp on a fly rod in the morning. Usually I catch 3 carp in a morning, if I am fishing an area that has been chummed. There are lots of days when I do not catch a fish. As stated earlier, other days you cannot get more than one rod out before you have a fish on. One secret for me is to use lots of rods, if you are fishing where that is legal. I typically put out 4 to 6 rods and then fly fish at the same time if it is slow. Sometimes that pays off big.

I'd say the average for casual carp anglers who just show up and put sweet corn on a hook and throw it out randomly would be about 1 carp per 1 rod every 40 minutes. The action can be similar to Cat fishing, with the smaller fish being more active. While I personally love to have a bunch of rods in the water, especially when targeting cats and carp at the same time, some of the funnest action can be had using just 1 rod. For 1 rod fishing I prefer close encounters, where I can chum the water with sweet corn just throwing it out far enough with my hands. Creeks, coves, etc. Create 3 chummed areas (30-50+ ft apart) ( a few handfuls each area) and every time you catch a fish, cast out to one of the other areas and chum the area again where you caught the fish. This is a deadly tactic when creek fishing. You get the fish moving back and forth through your chummed areas, competing for food, etc. When chumming for active fish, remember the pigeon feeding philosophy: Throw it all out at once, they will eat and go away, throw out a little at a time and enjoy feeding those pigeons all day. wink
