Talking about jerkbaits and how long you pause between jerks in cold water. Myself, 5-6 seconds is about all I
can do. I do more subtle jerks in cold water but just don't have the patience to pause 10 or 15 seconds-can't do it.

Interested in what others do.

I am from Missouri and on those clear lakes, you would sometime have to pause for longer than 15 sec. More like 30.
It is painful.

It's absolutely my favorite fishing, and I hardly ever pause more than 3 seconds, no matter how cold or how clear the water is. My longest pause is probably after the initial retrieve getting it down to depth.

Yeah, same here. I'm not fishing for fish that want a 30 second pause period.

If I want to let a bait sit, I'll take up cat fishing. About 5 is my max!

I love to throw a jerkbait and catch a lot of fish doing it. Very rarely do I ever pause longer than 3 seconds.

From Missouri also, water temp determines your cadence. The colder the water, the longer the pause. Myself, never longer than 15 seconds in 40 degree water temp. Water temp we have now-- 58 degrees- no pause.

On my 50th birthday, my wife booked me a trip with Mark Pack. It was August 6th, hotter than hatties! We were throwing weightless MPack Shads on a hump sittin in 16' throwing out deep to 25 to 30'. It takes about a second for the bait to fall a foot, so we would wait 30 seconds to let it get to the bottom. Then twitch twitch pause and wait 5 seconds. Pack would pick up his phone and be texting and sometimes would pick it up and move it 60 seconds between twitches and boated at least 4 double digits. I couldn't wait that long and never boated one over 8. Sometimes you gotta sit still longer than you want.

That would be impossible if you had your trolling motor on high burning down every bank! thumb

Its not easy but when the water is below 50 I pause a suspending jerkbait 15-20 secs between twitches. I haven't caught a DD on one yet but I did get a 9.60 at Fork in Feb on one. When I went to jerk the bait after the pause she was on it.

This is why drop shot can be so effective.
Anchor in position
Just drop it down there, make a sandwich, eat sandwich, open beverage
