Because you are not changing them once a year like youโre supposed to.
I hate photobucket.

I have to have a latter to change mine. If mine goes out at 2am I'm going to blast it with a 12ga shotty like it was a chicken in a pillow case.

Get the five(?) year batteries. They last five years in the package, but since most smoke alarms are hard wired, the battery is backup for power loss so should last for that long. put them in all mine recently. Will let you know in five years if true.

Why do smoke alarm batteries always die at 2am instead of 2pm. 02:30 AM on a Saturday just a couple weeks ago. We have four upstairs and I couldn't tell which one it was so I pulled all of them. Later that day I put new batteries in each of them. It will be interesting to see which one flakes out first.

Just changed all mine a few weeks ago. The one in my office started chirping during a webex I was giving. But yeah, usually happens in the middle of the night

Few years back we had a house in Pearland, TX. Middle of the night we hear the beep. I get up find my ladder and change the battery we think it is. No luck every now and them we would still hear the beep. Bought new 9volt batteries and changed out everyone in the house. Or at least I thought. Still would get a beep in middle of the night. Few days latter was hanging a deer head in trophy room with vaulted ceiling and realized another one right on the other side of entry from the other. I had two detectors not more than 3-4 feet apart. All I had to do was step in the other room and look up.
Thanks, Billy

What's worse is after trying several days to figure out where the smoke alarm chirping noise was coming discovering it was actually my truck's remote alarm key fob chirping.
