My wife's whole family lives in NH. I've been there a bunch of times but would never live there. Folks up that way are just "different" from what I am used to. I'll stay in TX. Have to agree. I've not lived in NH but did live a year and a half in Maine. Maine and NH are at reasonably the same latitudes. Things I liked: The fishing, the scenery, summers are nice but short. Things detrimental: Overbearance of control by government (controlling "laws" on everything), heavy taxation on any use of the public ways including bicycles, canoes and kayaks registration, yearly vehicle registration on a moderate mid size sedan was $400+/yr, on a Tacoma 4x4 was $600+. For the most part people were stand-offish to downright azzholes. Wimmin are ugly with frostbit skin and in winter wear mens' boots. It got dark at 1630 hours in the winter. It was cold ... real cold and it snowed from October thru May. All the NE is shut down by COVID right now. Too close to Boston and NY. That too cold statement means no car washing, special building techniques, and just plain a PIA going to the store or anywhere else. If you live in the country will need snow removal equipment. Everything, and I mean everything costs more ... substantially more ! No way I'd move back up there. I do fly through Bangor often though on our trips to New Brunswick. Where are you getting that kayaks and canoes have to be registered? The NH F&G website registration requirement is written exactly as Texas - all motorized vessels require it - non-motorized canoes and kayaks do not. I am aware of the vehicle registration fees. No state sales tax balances that out. Most of the property tax rates are close to what we pay now - we're at ~1.8% and I've seen 1.8-2.2% where I've been looking - so that's a wash - similar exemptions for rural land - except they call it current use vs "open 1-d1" or ag. Not too worried about the women as I'm married. Winters certainly suck - but so do the hot [censored] summers down here. Definitely would take some getting used to.

I was speaking specifically to Maine as I pointed out that I had not lived in NH but the things I despised about living in Me. which is the neighbor to NH. Don't know the laws on registration in NH but was trying to paint a picture on the costs of living being higher. Sounds like you have it figured out and I recommend you move on up there. Enjoy !

If you like NH go just a little further into Maine. There is a world of difference in the way the people act.Would much prefer a neighbor in Maine.

My wife just got back and said the town where they stayed “shuts down for the winter.†People also asked her and my mom what the special occasion was because they were wearing makeup. The waitress explained that the current trend was to tattoo your own arm and she showed off her amateur drawings in permanent ink. More lefties that she would have guessed.
Supposedly very pretty this time of year and a great destination for hikers/outdoor folks.
