I recently saw a video of a gentleman tying with sewing thread, have any of y’all ever done this, if so what type.

Yes can use other things to ty with, even mono fishing line! Try some 2 or 4 pound test. Know some fly guys like it more because it’s clear and when they use some glue the color under come up. Anyway lots of things can be used.
