Agreed on the sand . I have a 6" deep sand bed in my 77 tropical (24" high) . Those pebbles will allow all sorts of waste to accumulate . With cichlids , make sure the larger rocks are on the bottom of the tank so they won't fall over when the fish dig the sand out from under them . Nice tank . Keep an eye on that "Red Devil" .

I like it!!! I just finished re-doing my cichild tank (got rid of gravel) and instead of normal aquarium sand went back with the black - sand blasting media from Tractor Supply. about $10/50lbs, I probably used about 80lbs worth in a 65gallon. I like how it looks and those little buggers can dig to their hearts content. I read a ton of stuff on it before pulling the trigger, rinse and rinse and rinse, then rinse some more. I used a wheelbarrow to do it. Also went ahead while it was empty and taped the edges off and sprayed black plasti-dip on the outside of the back, you can pull it off if you ever want to change the background color. Pretty tank , Brian . Never thought of Plasti-dip . I've always used stovepipe paint but you have to use a scraper to get it off .

This has always gone in the bottom of my tanks, can't remember what it's called. I call it Insurance!
