You typically don’t sip the mainstream margarita-making tequilas unless you’re a die hard connoisseur, don’t have any other options or happen to know those out there that drink well. CCTX mentioned a couple of good ones at the lower/middle tier but if you’ll increase your price point a bit it opens you up to the truly flavorful tequilas.

There are some restaurants that have extensive tequila menus so you can pay for one drink without committing to the bottle. I like to find bargains in the Duty Free shops in Mexico. The “REAL” from Don Julio will knock your socks off with it’s flavor profile and soft lingering finish but my current favorite is Herradura’s “Seleccion Suprema” which you’d swear was a high end Scotch except for the agave and floral character.

Once you’ve had a REALLY good sipping tequila you realize what the others are shooting for.

Don Julio Real is my Favorite. George Strait's Codigo 1530 is pretty tasty. I have taken a new liking to Cantera Negra tequila

Good Fishing To Ya,
Ruben

Casa Amigos Reposado is my go to, like it room temp served in a Himalayan salt shot glass.

Thank y'all for all the recommendations. I am a bit knowledgeable on bourbons but know nothing on tequila. I bought some Hornitos (?) Friday, my 1st bottle of Tequila. I need more knowledge on the subject. This is for sipping, not 'ritas. I know my mileage may vary as far as taste buds.

I’d defer all questions to 1shot...

You should try Codigo.

The Milargo line is good in that price point. Go to Mi Día and they have tequila flights like places have beer flights. Sample 5-6 different ones, and they have a lot. My favorite is this one... but never found in Texas.
