I have caught them in several rivers and creeks but it has been a long time since I did.

I don't fish the back waters and sloughs as much as I did when I was younger.

Used to catch them in the San Marcos and Guadalupe Rivers here in Central Texas.

I caught a few below the Dennison Dam one time back in 1983. They kept getting me hung up when I'd get a bite while bottom fishing. Then actually got one in. Then figured out I couldn't bottom fish with minnows at that point.

Back in 1962-64, I was in college and we used to trotline the Brazos north of Waco. We waded the lines in and it was not unusual to catch 3 or 4 eels when running the lines during the night. The older guys that I was with taught me to reach down to the bottom and get a handful of sand and grab the eel with the sand to keep him from spinning around while we unhooked them. Never kept any of them.

Absolutely one of the best eats you will experience. The meat is snow white, sweet and flaky.

Don't know first hand ,but heard the meat oozed red when it cooled off after cooking.
