I am new to crappie fishing. I was wondering, how do you choose which tree stump to fish???

I normally fish the south end of lake Lavon and there is so much standing timber I get confused. I do not have live scope. Maybe someone can share some old school wisdom. I am not looking for spots, but general ideas to help me start my journey..

The best thing it is start fishing and try different depths and trees till you start catching and repeat that pattern.

Fish the timber on the Points, creek bends, humps, or near areas that drop quickly. Also lone isolated trees. Concentrate on timber that is around 20 foot or deeper in the months from May to October

Fished with zero electronics since I started crappie fishing about 8 years ago. Fished out of a 2 man 8 foot boat and just went tree to tree. Upgraded to a 17.5 foot boat this year but still has low grade electronics, not for much longer, and now I pick a depth range I want to work and just hit trees. If you can tell the difference, bios d arc and cedar trees seem to hold more fish than others. If I see something that looks like the top of a Christmas tree, I fish it for sure (typically cedars). Just cover lots of water and don't spend more than maybe 5-10 minutes on a tree. You will start to identify the trees that produce fish regularly and it will help identify what is different about them, location, depth, tree type, branch structure etc. I almost exclusively fish standing timber because I can see it but so can everyone else. Once I get spot loc on the boat and my electronics installed, I'll start to look for lay downs and submerged (hidden) timber and brush piles that I find. Good luck

If you think there is a lot of standing timber in the South end of Lake Lavon, just go to the North End (just south of the 380 bridges). There is an underwater forest there.

I echo this. To equip the OP, i suggest they download and purchase the Navionics app for $15/year, it works great with your phone GPS to get where you need to go. when you look at the contour lines, look for real tight lines like points and drop offs.

i would not be afraid to go a bit shallower than 20 feet.
