I currently have a 2003 150 hp 2-stroke Suzuki and would like to upgrade to a new 250 hp, 4-stroke with new motor harness. Can someone recommend the best motor for the money and where is the best place to get it done. I don't need a fancy motor since I only fish a couple of times a month but I would like a new motor out of a crate. Just need something reliable. Also, if you can offer your service, please shoot me an IM. Thanks,

The first question is if your boat is rated hor 250hp?

It is a 24' Center Console (Fish Master 2450). I believed it is build by Kenner last time I researched it. There is a sticker on the center console that says "Max Horse Power - 250". I suppose I could settle for a 200 or 225 HP

That's cool, I was concerned since it had a 150hp on it, I would go with a 250hp for sure on that boat. I have always had the best luck with Mercs but have zero experience with the 4 strokes....

What is wrong with the 150hp? Just underpowered or does it have issues?

Started a few years ago when running it for about 1/2 an hour on the lake and it won't start again until it cools down. Found out that there is a Neutral Switch inside the motor and when the shifter linkage goes back to neutral, it touches the switch telling the motor that the gear is in neutral. The linkage was not touching so I adjusted it and it worked good for the most part but everynow and then, it is hard to start the motor. I have not used the boat in 2 months and last week I tried to start it, it won't start. It will turn over all day long but just won't start. Sprayed starting fluid, nada. I bought the boat new in 2004 and now, it only has 200 hours on it. Problem is, me and my wife fish at night sometimes and I hate to get stranded on the lake in the middle of winter and at night and i am tired of messing with this motor. I really need something reliable. Also, I heard that some Suzuki has 2 Neutral switch, one inside the cowling and one inside the shifter control but I have not been able to find out about my engine yet. One of things I do when it doesn't start and pulling the shifter level back and forth slightly and sometimes it starts. I am not moving it far enough for it to move the linkage inside the cowling so I think there might be one inside the shifter. Anyway, time for a newer, more reliable motor to fish at night.

Thanks,

I would seriously consider another Suzuki. Six year warranty, generally a couple thousand cheaper than the others, quiet, and fuel efficient.

Bahala, do you have a dealer that you can recommend? Despite the few minor issue I had with my 2-stroke Suzuki 150, I am definitely a Suzuki Outboard Fan.

Being a Mercury dealer I am biased toward the new Merc. I would be glad to give you that opinion as to why if you’d like to call the shop tomorrow. If you don’t buy a Merc, I’d buy a Yamaha. If I can be of any assistance to you, don’t hesitate to holler at us tomorrow. I’m always glad to share my opinion, when it is asked for. I don’t know everything but I’ll try to share what I can.

I used Texas Boat Sales in Willis, TX when I repowered my previous boat. Great pricing and did an excellent job on rigging.
