Dang, I’ve never heard of anything like that before.

Is it due to boats having higher sides?

Most boats have a warning label on them about open air carbon monoxide poisoning. It can also happen to folks in the boat if you are idling a long distance and the wind is blow just right up the stern.

Something I have concern with as I do a lot of sonar logging/mapping at low speeds (5-10mph)
Think I got a little sick one day in that I very rarely get headaches; but after low speed sonar logging one day for 8 hours, I had a headache and felt very tired. Fell asleep as soon as I got home.

I think it's mostly an issue with inboards, not outboards.

this is mainly a thing on newer boats with exhaust coming out above water line. We had ski boats but exhaust when out through lower unit back then.
sad deal on the story, prayers for family

I would really like to know what type - brand name of boat. Inboard, outboard, etc.

I would really like to know what type - brand name of boat. Inboard, outboard, etc. It was an inboard board. In the pictures, there is a small child holding a single handle ski rope while on a wake board riding a large wave. Wake board speeds are pretty low. The brothers were probably taking turns wake boarding at low speed while the other two rode in the back. I was not aware this could be an issue while outside. Would a carbon monoxide detector work in the back of a boat? Do they make 12 volt carbon monoxide detectors?

Never knew that would happen on a ski boat, figured there would be enough breeze coming through to knock out whatever is bubbling up. I got a sick riding in the back cockpit of a big sportfisher while everyone else was inside. The diesel exhaust created a bubble that wouldn't blow out. I was messing with tackle and stuff and before you knew it, I was all sorts of messed up. It's also why they say not to put your dogs in the kennels on those receiver hitch racks for your trucks and SUVs. The exhaust never leaves behind your vehicle and can kill your animal.

Would a carbon monoxide detector work in the back of a boat? Do they make 12 volt carbon monoxide detectors? That makes sense. I want to say wake surf boats have a exhaust outlet on the "heavy" side of the boat to stop this from happening. Regular inboard boats just exhaust out the back, so when they try to surf it just blows back to the surfer.
