I was just wondering what’s your favorite crappie reel? I really like the Shimano Spirex spinning reel. The one hand operation is my most favorite thing about it. The Quick fire one hand bail opening really makes it nice. Just wondering what makes others use the reels they use. Thanks

Mitchell 310 Pro works for me. Not a quick trigger bail but very compact, good drag system and the NO flip out bails when setting the hook. Works great with braid or mono.

Abu black max works for me. 99 % of my fishing is vertical, I grew tired of fighting the bail on spinning gear. Mo

Just depends on what rod and what I use each rod and rell combo for, my long rods that I use for vertical jigging it would be a waste spending money on a good reel as its only purpose is basically to hold line although the drag is used when fighting those bigger fish that eat my crappie jigs from time to time.... Now on my casting combos I'll spend a little bit of money on a nice Shimano reel which I prefer.....

70% of my crappie reels are low profile baitcasters of various makes/models on 10'-13' rods. I just prefer them over spinning reels when I am vertical fishing without casting. All of my spinning reels are the B'n'M Pro 100.

Shimano Sienna 500fd, small and compact. Spooled with yellow 20 # power pro super slick braid, I use a 10-12# Berkley mono leader, I usually start with 20 feet, more for depth control than any thing else.

I never really thought about using a bait caster for my jigging rod. I guess I’ve just always used a spinning reel. I have a couple older Shimano bantam 100 reels bait casting reel on the wall in the shop. I think I’ll spool one of those up and give that a try. Thanks for all the input guys!

7' and under rods get a Shimano 500 series.
10' and 12' get a left hand Quantum or left hand Abu. Both have a flipping switch so I can engage/disengage the clutch one handed.

I thought that was something that only happened to me. I was thinking of switching to small baitcasters because I’ve lost some really nice fish on the hook set/bail flip recently. Thanks for sharing

I like the little Wally Marshall signature series baitcast reels on my jig rods. Small and lightweight, but still have a good enough drag system to wrestle 10+ lb catfish out of a brush pile if need be. For $24 they have served me very well. On my shorter spinning rods I use under our bridges and for dock shooting I have been using the Wally Marshall Speed Shooter in the 75 size. Only weighs like 5 oz and has handled every fish I've needed them too.

Personally, I really like the Mr Crappie MCS 75 with 6 lb hi vis. I use them on a 10 ft. West Point Crappie rod. Egg sinker, a plastic bead, and a fine wire circle hook.
