Saw this posted on BBC and found it pretty disturbing. I don't ski or wake board but have family members that do. I have to admit that having only owned bass boats with outboards all my life I was totally ignorant and never gave it a thought. Ironically while looking through the original manuals/ documentation for my Ranger I found a pamphlet sponsored in part by the USCG addressing this hazard. https://www.hccommunityjournal.com/...rce=facebook&utm_campaign=user-share

My father always warned about CO poisoning and explosion with inboard engines. I have only had bass oats with outboards though

Probably a dumb question but is this a concern for in boards only ? We just took the kids tubing in broken bow and were thinking about buying another boat to tube with.

They seem to be claiming backdraft co issues, but it seems more logical it is from co leaking through the engine cover. The latter likely carries legal and civil liabilities.

It doesn't surprise me. I was always taught from the time we got the boat (I was 4) that you turn on the exhaust 5 minutes before you start the engine and keep it going until you're on plane...and then about 2 minutes after you stop the boat...anytime you're idling, or not on plane, the exhaust is supposed to be on. My father is a *******, but he was right about that. First thing we always did in the parking lot was turn on the exhaust and while in the boat, get the plug out of the glove compartment, insert it, load up the boat with people and gear, and unstrap the back strap before going to the ramp.
Very sad situation....

I went out on a guided deep sea fishing boat . Mid engine diesel , exhaust out back under water . Captain gave us all a talk about the back drafting and what the signs to watch out for . A few people got pretty sick and had to be moved to the front of the boat for fresh air . He tried to not let the wind come from directly behind us but sometimes it couldn't be avoided . I can see where a smaller personal watercraft could have it happen and effect a person but it seems like a little common sense would avoid a horrible experience like the death of a child . If I smell exhaust I put the bow into the wind or zig zag a little to help discourage the back draft . I wonder if these battery operated blood oxygen meters would show a problem if a child started acting sick or lethargic ?

If you are talking about a pulse oximeter, and looking for carbon monoxide, the answer would be no.

Very sad situation.... I’ve had two inboards and ran the exhaust as you state above, my Mariah had a pneumatic cover that I would raise and leave open until I was ready to drop the hammer

Never would’ve thought about that. Very sad.
