I'm seriously considering doing this simply because I'm afraid that if Trump loses, the market is going to drop drastically and at my age,I don't have enough years left for it to recover....If i was a ytoung guy,I wouldn't do it but what are the older guys on heres thoughts?

If trump wins I am buying oil

call it what you will...he is not definitely not anywhere near the top of the list for QB's that I would choose needing a FG or touchdown drive late in the game.

Not out as in pure 100% cash positions, but *highly* defensive prior to the election - certainly with most client accounts. I can't justify the risk.

The tax consequences of doing so would be more than I could endure

You do understand that looking back to 1900, Democrats have been slightly better for stocks, with the Dow up an average of nearly 9% annually when the Democrats are in control versus Republicans right?

what are the tax consequences if for instance, you sold all your stocks 2 weeks prior the election then bought back into stocks day after the election?.....I could be wrong but I thought you had a grace period you could re-invest without a penalty....

Wash sale. Cant deduct losses from taxes if reinvested within +/- 30 days of the sale. Gains on sale are taxed as a normal gain. Just google wash sale and it will tell you what you need to know.

edit to add: this is only applicable to buying/selling the same (or "substantially identical") stocks.

I don’t know the answer to that

I truly don’t think the market is going to tank if the Democrats sweep the elections.

If the market likes anything, it likes stability and Trump isn’t that given all of this comedy he has played with the Chinese

If we could get those old Democrats back that might hold true. US history has never endured these kind of idiots.

I may have to eat my hat for saying this but if it hasnt crashed yet I don’t believe it will. With poll numbers I would say it’s about 50/50 he loses. That alone has not been enough to keep it down. Now once Biden begins to remove tax breaks it will have an effect, but still money to be made before then.

The Fed has been heavily backstopping this market.

As far as I know, this is factual. Have looked it up a couple of times, and history proves it to be correct. My broad view is that when the DEMS win, tariffs will go away. Other countries will begin to trust America again. Currently, they don't. Markets which have been hurt will recover. I will personally feel things are on their way to recovering when air travel returns to near normal.

I know we had a brief market correction in March/April. The disconnect between the stock market and the economy + national debt level isn't sustainable. Doesn't matter who gets elected, the stock market is overdue for a prolonged correction. I wouldn't completely exit stocks, but it's a good time to do some re balancing. According to Forbes, the US stock market is 77% overvalued. Sell high, buy low.
