Monday 9/14/2020: Went out at 7:30 AM to see what I could find. Started at Key Ranch Drop-off, and Fastguy and SnagginSteve were already there, and I got to see George's new boat - very nice! I looked around and stopped momentarily at Key Ranch North. Got hung up on 1st cast and after losing my #2 Mepps and tieing on another, I couldn't see much. So, I went back to Key Ranch (since George and Steve had left) and found a bunch on north edge of it. Spotlocked there in 17 fow and started catching fish. Shorty thereafter I got a call, and golfing/fishing buddies Ed and Paul were heading out from Ed's dock and wanted to know where the fish were. I invited them on over, they set up next to me, and we caught fish there for about an hour.

The fish kept moving around, and I finally got tired of relocating them, so I said I was going to Spillway Hump. Ed and Paul followed. We found a huge school on the bottom in 14 to 15 fow on the western arm of it and sat there for an hour or more and caught fish steadily. We were catching on #2 and #4. They seemed to want 4's for a while then want 2's.

I left them still catching to go check Enchanted Isle Ridge and found a good school there near the western edge . I caught several on #4 before heading home. I didn't even try 2's there since they were taking 4's readily. I ended up with 88 whites, 4 hybrids with biggest at 25 inches, a nice yellow bass and a cat. Ed said they caught 60: 50 whites, 9 short hybrids and a 23 inch hybrid. Here are some pics of Ed and Paul:

The 25 incher was bleeding badly and it took too long to get him unhooked, so I quickly measured and put it back in water. Fortunately he lived.

9/16/2029: Starting at 4 PM I checked out 3 spots I haven' tried in a while - Kevin's Point, Iron Wall Hump and Slide Hump. Found fish on all three. At Kevin's Point they were in 15 to 18 fow and wanted a #4 Mepps. I used the opportuniy to compare the new MAL Mepps lure to the regular plain Mepps Aglia. I compared two ways. First, I tested how many fish I could catch in a row after I located fish. With the MAL the best I could do was 7 before missing a bite on the eighth cast. I handicapped the regular Mepps by using a 2 hooker, since I am more experienced with it, and caught 5 in a row before also missing a bite on 6th cast. The second way I tested was comparing the number of catches out of 5 casts - also after I located fish (did this at all 3 spots). The best I could do with MAL was 3 out of 5 several times. I was able to do 4 or 5 out of 5 casts with the regular Mepps . On many of the no-fish casts with both lures, I got strikes. So far in the comparison I am convinced that when the fish are aggressive, the MAL works as good or better (can work it faster) than regular Mepps. What is unclear so far is if MAL will do as good as regular when fish are not aggressive. I will continue to test.

At Iron Wall Hump fish were on the NW corner of it in 23 to 26 fow. Fish were reluctant to take a #4 and had to switch to #2 to catch them. After catching 10 there I moved out to Slide Hump and found fish in 24 fow. They wanted 4's there. I quit at 6:30 PM with total of 50 whites and a 20 inch hybrid.

I was schooled many many times by some old timers who were fishing "Those old lures". I remember thinking oh this should be interesting, then to have my A$$ handed to me.. I learned early on >>>>

When you spend some time with a bait you figure out how to make it work the best. I know all of us can agree most lures in the "big stores" are made to catch the fisherman, but some baits just catch fish. And the technique you are using does catch fish.. Been really imprinting this into my son, but I too have been surprised by a new lure, or an old favorite resurrected from the dead and used to catch fish.
If I have the slightest feeling that something doesn't feel right, or what I am doing is not going to catch fish, it gets cut and I move to what I feel used to using. The hard thing for me is stepping out of the box and trying new lures which are pretty expensive. "If" there was a super deal that I could justify, I would probably try other things if the opportunity arose. Now with Bass fishing, I think there is a Hollywood game show going on with all the new baits these days. It's pretty surprising what you can spend on some of the lures. But with stripers, sandbass, and Hybrids it is sorta the same except for size of the lure. Strange thing, if I am buying something I have experience using, and it produces it's easy to step up to the cashier. But buying something I have not used, or seen results with is difficult. But if I can try the same thing with something cheaper I am going to go that route. Taking line choice and rod/reel out of the equation I 100% believe its the "Indian", not the arrow. That is why it is so nice to fish with other anglers and learn their tricks and secrets. This is what is passed down to the young ones. The guys out there that are explaining in detail how they are using the lure, what depth, etc.. " Hats off to you guys".. This is very refreshing.

I love pepsi challenges between lures. We do this all the time to see what happens.

Dennis, have you thought about (if you haven't already done so), do a video on how you locate fish?

Dennis, I’m curious as to what your rod, reel, and line setup is to fish for whites and hybrids with the Mepps spinners. Thanks !

Lollygagger: I have not considered it, but will give it some thought.

Drycreek3189: My optimum setup is a Lew's TS1SHMB Baitcaster 7.5:1 reel, a Tournament Choice Angler TCA-56MC 5 ft 6 in medium action pistol-grip rod and Berkley VISION 100% fluorocarbon gold tinted 10 lb line. A close 2nd rod is the Shakespeare DURANGO SC 56 2M 5 ft 6 in medium action pistol-grip. The reel runs about $120 and the rods about $15. I get the reel and Tournament Choice rod at Academy and the Shakespeare DURANGO rod at Walmart. The reel is smallish allowing me to hold it in the palm of my hand and keep my thumb lightly touching the spool and my index finger lightly touching the line as I reel it in. The smooth reeling of the Lew's and finger touching the line helps me feel the slightest of bites. The thumb lightly touching the spool as the bait is free-falling to the bottom lets me know when the bait has reached the bottom without watching the line. The short rod minimizes rod shaking as I crank the reel with the rod pointing at the line as in my Mepps#4 video. Since these inexpensive rods work so well, I've never had to explore more expensive rods in search of better performance.

Saturday 9/19/2020: Took fishing buddy Gordon out this morning. Left dock about 8:15 AM and returned at 1 PM having caught 96: 93 white bass, 2 hybrids and a yellow bass. We started at Kevin's Point in 20 fow, then Spillway Hump in 18 to 20 fow and finally Enchanted Isle Ridge in 20 fow. Gordon caught all his on #4 Mepps, and I caught them using both #2 and #4. Fish were more aggressive early and got finicky as the day went on. The hybrids were 20 and 19 inches, and many of the whites were 15 to 16 inch fish. Here are pics of the hybrids:

I would like to see a video on how you locate them as well.

I drove down Sunday should’ve looked at the wind forecast first It was a little choppy in my 16 foot boat

I only managed a few, one under hybrid and a couple of small whites

I was having issues with my trolling motor and the GPS spotlock function would not work so it made for a rough day
