Trying to figure out a way to word this and make sense. Do you guys find certain colors to work better or does color matter in you opinion? I fish a lake that’s really thick with hydrilla, matted up to the surface and miles of it. I would think any color of bait should work the same, but I swear it seems that I get more bites on the old standby watermelon seed. Simple answer, right...only throw watermelon seed....Well I have a billion other colors that I want to use up; but I can’t seem to get bit when I use them.

So, does color matter or not?

Some will say yes absolutely color matters. Others will say absolutely not, that’s it’s just a reaction bite. Personally I flip, cast, pitch PUNCH....with the same colors that I feel work for me(have confidence in). No disrespect meant but sounds like you have already answered the question as it pertains to you!

If it helps/matters, random was emphasized by that person at the ramp. Didn’t sound like it was lights out by any means. I wouldn’t think color matters on a reaction technique like punching but......wth do I know....

The best color for me for punching has been watermelon/red. I have seen too many times that color DOES matter to the fish so I will experiment to see which gets bit the most that day and go with that. I have about 5 go to colors depending on water clarity, weather, sunny or cloudy and what has worked in the past on the lake I am fishing.

I was launching Sunday morning at the same time as that person, I saw where he went to, kind of surprised me.

I do not fish the matted areas much. It is always the deepest grass just under the surface. I use the Heavy Drop Shot technique. The Hoo Daddy Junior in Watermelon Seed Neon is the best color. It looks just like the Watermelon Red; but there is a great difference when it comes to catching.

Depends.. are they eating it on the initial drop or after you stroke it a few times? If in the initial drop I would say color doesn’t matter as that’s typically a reaction strike. If your having to stroke it or hold it suspended under the mat to get the fish to come to it color probably matters a little more. Figure out what color the crayfish are right now In the grass on that lake and your in good shape either way.

From my experience, watermelon red is difficult to beat for thick hydrilla.

There’s a small lake with the thickest pads I’ve ever seen. In the summer time, half the lake is covered in a blanket of pads. I’ve thrown the usual watermelons, blacks, and pumpkins ; and it’s the crazy looking old YUM crawdad color that does best (pumpkin back with a weird orange belly). The crawfish In this small lake do look almost exactly like that most of the year.

I definitely think color matters at times. I never really thought that until I fished Falcon and the Mexican lakes. For some reason Watermelon Red outshines them all down there almost to the point I don't take any other color. There is something about the way that color you are using contrasts the hydrilla that the fish like.

This is what I’m thinking too, I thought black would be a great color in hydrilla due to it being easy to see, I can’t get a bite on it.

Thanks for the comments guys, I do like the hoo daddy’s, just aren’t easy to find anymore.

sprayed grass my number 1 for clear water or summer craw. If i'm imitating blue gill I like to have some chartreuse on the tails. If the water is dirty I like the bruiser flash color with some chartreuse on the tail as well. D-bomb is my creature bait of choice followed by the rage bug.

color matters 100%. But certain bodies of water a certain color just works better. My favorite 2 punching colors used to be “green goby” and “magic craw blue swirl” that reaction makes in the sweet beaver. And I literally have every color sweet beaver ever made
