How'd y'all do?

Hunted over corn in Waller this morning and saw about 3 birds total. Didn't fire a shot and only heard a few others shooting. Still more fun than work. Hope you all had better luck than i did.

be very careful taking your retriever if it's over 80 degrees...

Yes sir definitely need to keep an eye on them in this heat. We did a lap around the field (out of desperation for a bird) and it definitely took a toll on him. We do lots of running around the woods/river bottoms year-round and he is very well conditioned, but usually has a water source close by to cool off in when necessary. I brought plenty of water for this exact reason and gave him a little water bottle shower when we got back to our spot and he was good as new. Sleeping like a rock now though.

While I agree that it is important to keep an eye on your pups in this heat, we also live in Texas. Hell, I've been on late season south zone hunts that were over 80 degrees in December. My dog would get left at home more often than not if I waited for it to cool off below 80.

Unfortunately, I was sitting at my desk and my pup was at home (probably tearing something up) this morning instead of sitting in a field. Planning on getting out here pretty soon.

We used to take a kiddie pool and two trash cans full of water with us. My old black lab would hunt till she died, so the only way was to leave her at home or bring a water park with us.

Leaving work in about 30 minutes to get in an afternoon hunt. Not expecting much action. Just no birds in the area yet. Maybe this weather change will bring some in for next week.

Ditto- I barter with a neighbor down the road this time of year and swap Flounder for Dove. Thanks for the reminder. thumb
