I downloaded the Texas Outdoor Annual app today and got a surprise concerning jug line requirements. It appears to me they can not be more than 6” long and 3” in diameter. I had previously heard about the 3” diameter and all of my jugs meet that requirement but are longer than 6”. My flagging jugs are too long to meet this requirement and I suspect that anything most of us have been using are longer than 6”. Am I missing or misunderstanding something here? If so please set me straight.

Here is TPWD's official news release after they adopted the changes last fall. It says at least 6 inches in length and no less than 3 inch in diameter. I suspect a misprint in the annual and the proof reader missed it. Good thing they did not have a ton printed this year.

Other approved changes add the requirement that minnow traps, throwlines, and trotlines have floats attached to aid in distinguishing active fishing gear from abandoned fishing gear and litter. All floats used on juglines, minnow traps, throwlines, and trotlines must be at least 6 inches in length and not less than 3 inches in width. For these four gears, floats for recreational anglers can be any color other than orange, while commercial fishing license holders will be required to use orange-colored floats.

These changes will go into effect on February 1, 2020.

TPWD has corrected the wording in the Outdoor Annual to reflect the correct length requirement for jugline floats. It now reads not less than 6 inches in length and 3 inches in diameter. I sent an email yesterday asking for a clarification and received an acknowledgement from TPWD this morning and the annual was corrected before noon. Great response from the TPWD staff.
